The Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O) is the high-bandwidth laser communications terminal aboard NASA's crewed Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II lunar mission. O2O provides a dedicated high-speed data link capability—enabling real-time downlink of 4K video streams, high-resolution lunar surface imagery, and science telemetry across nearly 400,000 kilometers from cislunar space back to Earth. Key Components & Architecture of the O2O TerminalO2O connects directly to Orion's Onboard Utility Network (OUN) via standard Gigabit Ethernet, serving as an optical network bridge between the spacecraft's avionics and ground controllers at NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston. The terminal consists of three main modules: Optical Module: Features a compact 4-inch (10 cm) telescope mounted on a two-axis gimbal. It uses coarse-pointing actuators and fine-steering mirrors driven by real-time control loops to track Earth ground dishes and counteract spacecraft jitter. Optical Modem: Converts Orion's electronic data into 1,550 nm infrared laser pulses. The modem dynamically selects downlink transmission rates ranging from 20 Mbps up to 260 Mbps depending on spacecraft distance and link quality. Controller & Power Unit: Manages command protocols, interfaces with Orion's flight computers via RS-422 and Ethernet, and handles power conversion. How O2O Builds on ILLUMA-TO2O is the direct technological successor to the ILLUMA-T (Integrated LCRD LEO User Modem and Amplifier Terminal) payload deployed on the International Space Station.
