The Primary Relay System: Lcrd And Illuma-t
1. LCRD (Laser Communications Relay Demonstration)Orbital Position: Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) at 112° W on the STPSat-6 spacecraft (launched December 2021). Function: Serves as a persistent optical relay node. LCRD receives laser signals from spacecraft or ground dishes, processes or routes the data, and beams it down to primary Optical Ground Stations in California (OGS-1) and Hawaii (OGS-2). Data Rate: Up to 1.2 Gigabits per second (Gbps). Key Tests: Has conducted dozens of propagation experiments through atmospheric variations and thin clouds, as well as testing High-Rate Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (HDTN) to enable Internet-like protocols in space. 2. ILLUMA-T (Integrated LCRD LEO User Modem and Amplifier Terminal)Orbital Position: Exterior payload on the International Space Station's Japanese Experiment Module. The Breakthrough: In December 2023, ILLUMA-T achieved "first light" with LCRD. This formed NASA’s first end-to-end laser system spanning LEO (ISS) $\rightarrow$ GEO (LCRD) $\rightarrow$ Earth Ground Station. Operational Results: Transmitted data at 1.2 Gbps and successfully hooked up ISS onboard computers to ground networks via a standard Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connection. After completing its primary experiment objectives, the ILLUMA-T payload was decommissioned in mid-2024. Other Pioneering Space-to-Ground Laser MissionsIn addition to the LCRD/ILLUMA-T relay architecture, several other real-world missions have pushed distinct boundaries in optical networking:TBIRD (TeraByte InfraRed Delivery): A 6U CubeSat payload that demonstrated direct-to-ground laser downlinks achieving burst data transfer speeds of 200 Gbps—the fastest optical downlink speed recorded from space.DSOC (Deep Space Optical Communications): Hosted on NASA's Psyche mission, DSOC proved laser communications across deep space distances. It successfully downlinked high-definition video and data from over 200 million miles away at rates up to 10 times higher than tradi
